A kutatás

The RESCAPE (=REturn and ESCAPE) focuses on the historical period of forced migration (1938-1956): the Shoah, the liberation and the expulsion during the red dictatorship. It is based on the biographical interview collections of the Voices of the 20th Century Archive ( interviews with Hungarian Survivors of the Mauthausen concentration camp, former forced laborers from Hungary and Slovakia and emigrees of 1945-1956). Although there are plenty of projects on the communist period, most of them focus on the general political history and less on personal experiences. Remembering is a slow, painstaking, multifaceted and long process that cannot be linked directly to fixed dates like “liberation”. Besides historical and political researches and analysis, there is need for methodological tools to convey messages and teach about research results. Our aim is to contribute to the dissemination and teaching about these historical periods and help understanding and interpreting the past. We plan to present the following two topics: • RETURN – app. 45-minute long audio documentations in Hungarian – about the hardships of returning from the concentration camps after the liberation • ESCAPE – life histories of emigrés (video materials based on interviews with the escapees of the communist dictatorship, who were forced to leave the country after 1945 – in Hungarian with English subtitles) The aim is to make the collections available for the wider public and for teaching purposes. The project will have four pillars realized in the following steps: - developing an interactive educational website - producing multimedia presentations for educational purposes, - in cooperation with our partner institutions - specialized NGOs and active members of the Hungarian civil society - organizing teacher’s training material to disseminate and implement the educational materials developed in RESCAPE, - organizing public presentations for the website and the multimedia material.
