Absztrakt

The issue of birth has been in the forefront of political and professional discussions for decades. While on the political level, the emphasis has been on the demographic dimension due to the shrinking population in Hungary, more and more initiatives have been rising on the quality of care and the conditions of birth itself. This paper is looking at the consequences of the transformations in obstetric care, focusing on the mothers’ experiences and coping strategies within the marketizing healthcare system, where the state has invaded the health care sector by taking over control over the entire sector, and at the same time abandoned the institutions, the health care workers and the clients. The paper aims to discuss how an attributed concept of safety mobilizes women to seek for options for birth outside the public care, and analyzes their motivations and experiences in private care. A central concept of the paper is safety – as the empirical research suggests, the idea of safety is the major drive behind the women’s decision when considering an option for their birth.
