Absztrakt:

My paper is based on a critical discourse analysis of two controversial science policy measures of the Hungarian government in the 2010s. The case of Lex CEU concerns the infamous exile of an American private university from Budapest to Vienna in 2018. The Lex HAS case represents the separation of Hungary's largest research institute network from its former custodian, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 2019. Both government actions, albeit in different ways, created a serious conflict between the academic community and the government.

The aim of this paper is to reconstruct the structure of the discourse, focusing on the participation of the academic elite. Using the tool of critical discourse analysis, I present the narrative techniques by which members of the elite create their positions in a polarised media and social context. The framework of the analysis is social identity theory. I identify the main cleavages, especially the role of partisan polarisation, and show how the level of complexity of social identities affected the positions of the academic elite in supporting/opposing the science policies analysed.
