Absztrakt:

Since very little scientific work has been published on the evolution of urban planning approaches in post-socialist countries and cities following the beginning of democratic transition in 1989/90, this paper aims to explore urban planning in Budapest, Hungary, from a specific dimension: methods of public participation, through the lens of nearly 80 urban planning documents adopted in the last three decades by the Municipality of Budapest and the local governments of the districts. Results of our research concluded that public participation is increasingly part of urban planning, however, there are large and increasing discrepancies between the districts of Budapest in terms of forms of public participation. Path dependency, political cleavages and personal factors all seem to play in role in such developments, while any development should be evaluated against the backdrop of local autonomy in Hungary in recent years.
